2010 Realtors Expo and Conference
As we mentioned a couple of weeks back, we had an absolute blast at 2010’s Realtors Conference and Expo. And while we were thrilled with the activities, speakers and events, the real benefit was just meeting everyone at the event, making new friends and doing some old-fashioned networking. If you signed up on our mailing list for one reason or another, you’ll certainly be hearing from us in the near future. And one of those reasons may just be to tell you you won the iPod Nano from our giveaway. That is, if your name is … [drumroll] … Trish O’Connor from Coldwell Banker in West Memphis, AZ!

You are the proud owner of a new iPod Nano and can expect word from us soon.

Skype

VoIP provider Skype recently announced a big milestone, having hit 25 million concurrent users Monday. The service, which allows people to make voice and video calls over the internet, has over 500 million users, but 25 million is a new high for members simultaneously using the service. This has to be counted as a positive sign for a company who recently filed papers to go public, a move which they hope will raise as much as $100 million and will immediately make them one of the largest publicly traded internet companies. Facebook Removes Gmail from Friend-Finder

Facebook Friend-Finder

In the ongoing battle between Facebook and Google, the social networking giant has struck the latest blow. Many new users utilize Facebook’s friend-finder to import contacts from their various email accounts, using Facebook’s simple system that accesses the API of an email provider such as Yahoo or Hotmail, combs the member’s address book and then searches Facebook for those email addresses to add the correlating individual as a friend. And while this is the simplest way for new members to automatically add friends dozens at a time to an account, Facebook is no longer offering users the option to import contact from Gmail. Cascade Bancorp Raises $177 Million; Sign of Recovering Economy?

November 22, 2010 | Financial | Comments (0)

Cascade Bancorp

It looks like Bend’s largest locally based bank, Cascade Bancorp, will survive the recent economic woes plaguing much of Oregon’s financial industry, and in fact it may be a harbinger of good things to come. Cascade Bancorp has suffered from a shortage of capital in light of the recent housing market collapse, but the sale of more than 87% of its common stock, which will raise about $177 million, now makes it one of the nation’s most well-financed community banks. November 19, 2010 | tech corner | Comments (0)

Stipple Picture

A mere three months after its launch, Stipple has raised a $2 million seed round from such wide ranging investors as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Floodgate and even Justin Timberlake. The online service is attempting to open new revenue channels for the average person, allowing users to easily label the contents of pictures hosted online, and even monetize the photos with ads or product offers relevant to the labels. In addition to helping monetize the average person’s vacation photos, Stipple’s new People Dots feature will make photo hosting more social. Just as Stipple allows the user to tag items that might interest potential advertisers, they can also tag the people who show up in pictures, and feature pertinent links to things such as those individuals social networks, whether the picture subjects are on Stipple or not. LinkedIn: Employed or Looking, it may be Time to Join

LinkedIn

If you’re looking for the best way to keep in touch with your professional contacts—or search for jobs in a brand new way—you may want to finally give in and join LinkedIn. It was announced yesterday that the site, at one time a niche community for early adopters, has officially cracked 85 million members and is adding a new user every second. A more formal, professionally-targeted social network than Facebook, LinkedIn provides ample tools for networking for businesses, learning more about those in your industry and, yes, even looking for jobs. (Although based on that number of users, you may already know that.) Due to the huge membership numbers, many of whom are employers, it’s often the first site on which those seeking to fill openings choose to list positions, and applicants with a fully completed profile are forty times more likely to receive opportunities through the site. And before you ask, of course we’re on LinkedIn. Keep in touch!

Shopkick: An Interactive Experience for Brick & Mortar Shopping

Shopkick

For savvy shoppers looking for a leg up this holiday season, a new mobile phone app called Shopkick may be just the help you need. The “geo-coupon” app is installed on your phone and delivers a more interactive shopping experience for those of us who still like to shop in the physical world. Unlike other geo-apps such as Facebook Places, Foursquare or Yelp which require you to “check-in,” Shopkick simply senses whenever you walk into a participating retailer. When you do, you receive points (also known as “kickbucks”) which aggregate toward rewards such as gift cards for that particular store. And as a huge boon for Christmas shoppers this year, Target has recently partnered up to offer the service at 242 of its locations in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York City, and the San Francisco area, joining retail giants like Best Buy, American Eagle, Sports Authority and Macy’s who are all beginning to work with Shopkick. Realtors Conference and Expo: NARdi Gras 2010

November 16, 2010 | Industry Update | Comments (0)

NARdi Gras 2010

Last week marked the most recent Realtors Conference and Expo, held in New Orleans and entitled NARdi Gras 2010, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience for all of us at Summa who attended. In addition to the entertainment (live concert by Earth, Wind & Fire!), the speakers and events lined up were a perfect fit for the weekend: both informative and entertaining. The Fast Pitch Innovation Contest was a unique way for groups to pitch their businesses and ideas to a roomful of interested folks, as well as potential investors, and got even the spectators thinking outside the box. The Realtors Got Talent competition was … exactly what it sounds like: a bit of a silly talent show, but an absolute blast to watch. (Realtors can do more than just sell!) Keynote speaker Regis Philbin was as compelling as he is in absolutely everything he does, although as the avid basketball and Blazers fans that we are (as well as fans of ludicrous use of the English language) our favorite speaker was Bill Walton. Walton’s talk really put a focus on perseverance and commitment in order to reach goals, as well as the power of teamwork, something we can all forget at times. Read More +
